Once again I got the opportunity to test drive another sporty Ford vehicle – the Fiesta ST. I picked up the 2014 ST 6-speed Manual Transmission from the Universal Ford dealership in Calgary to test drive it under highway and city driving conditions. In Calgary winter road conditions! With snow tires on, this little beast maintains stability and traction control just like any AWD.

The interior is stylish and sharp like any Premium vehicle brands. The leather Recaro seats are way more comfortable than my memory foam mattress.

The cabin space does feel smaller than the Focus interior. But given the slightly smaller size span of the Fiesta, the maneuverability is far more superior.

The 1.6L EcoBoost engine delivers a powerful 197 horsepower thrust that can get you from 0-100 KM/hour in 5.4 seconds*.

(* average of 5 attempts clocked by me under normal dry road conditions)

My test drive model was Green Envy. The bright color did attract a lot of attention (none from cops). Once, as I parked and got out the vehicle near a construction site, the crew stopped their work on site and came over to inquire about the ST. Most were gawking over the vehicle interior. Who knew these tough macho Ford F150 truck aficionados were also moved by the nimbleness and style of the little Fiesta.

The low centre of gravity allows for super tight cornering at curves and the torque is powerful enough to glide uphill at 45 degree angle in low gear.

Summary

I had the vehicle for one week and drove on both City and Highway roads. The performance was really good but that is expected given the overall size of the vehicle in comparison to the powerful engine. The car feels sturdy and strong (unlike older models of the Fiesta).

Similar to my experience with the Focus, I did not experience any difference in driving performance in ‘Sport’ mode to be honest. All it is really is the traction control turned off. Also the reversing using the stick takes some getting used to as it is not designed intuitively – one has to lift up a knob at the top of the lever and push the stick in first gear. As you can see, this is not intuitive and can be potentially dangerous.

The Fiesta is the base lineup in Ford car family and irrespective of the fun factor, it still remains a very small cab that may be impractical for a growing family. It felt tight inside even for a guy like me who is neither tall nor big. Strangely enough, the starting price of the ST, at $25,000, seems quite pricey for the expected demographic of this model. But then again, I am no market researcher or a pricing analyst.

The most impressive feature of the vehicle though is something that has nothing to do with the glitz factor. The grand prize goes to its incredible fuel economy. For example, I did a round trip Calgary – Edmonton (600 km) in one full tank of gas (and then had some left in case I fancied a quick jaunt to Red Deer, AB). Wow! That N.E.V.E.R happens to me.
