A Walk on the Amazon River (Day 2 of 5) | Budget Adventure Travel
Dec 30, 2011
The first night in the lodge was unique experience. There is no electricity on site. We use flashlights and candles to move about in the dark. Have to be wary of bugs lizards frogs and little tree snakes (mostly non-lethal we were told!!Keyword here is MOSTLY). Slept under treated mosquito nets.
The lodges are installed with running water (hot and cold), sump pump for waste, private washroom, and bedroom. Mosquito nets provided. Daily room clean up is done by staff.
Our daily routine at the lodge was to wake up at 6:00 AM, wash up and head out for breakfast in the dining room with other for freshly cooked breakfast made within the lodge.
After breakfast we paddled by traditional dug-out canoe on the Caimancocha lake where we enjoyed the uniqueness of this area of rainforest. (Note: You will be entering Cayman territory and depending on season, your naturalista (guide) will warn you from venturing too deep)
We return to Laguna Grande in the afternoon for some Piranha fishing.
Piranhas are native of the Amazon and known for their sharp teeth and a voracious appetite for meat. Unlike the common portrayal in movies, they don’t typically attack humans in the water (unless there is excessive blood). We eventually cooked and ate it for lunch. Tastes like any regular fish.
Here is a link to my video of the Piranha chopping up a twig.
After a little siesta we get ready for a evening hike into the primary rainforest to view species active at night.
Like the size of a locust.
This one can be eaten!
