Things to do, places to visit in Lima Peru | Budget Adventure Travel
The capital city of Peru, Lima, is all about ACTION!
The vibrancy and activeness are not unlike any major North American city, but also comes with a distinct Latin fare. I love traveling to South American metropolis’ like this and others for the pure joy and exhilaration of immersing in a cosmopolitan world that is sort of both familiar and unfamiliar to someone used to living in large urban centres in North America.
Lima is a coastal capital city fronting on to the Pacific Ocean. Up until my trip to Peru, I had never seen the Pacific Ocean.
Lima can be distinctly divided in to modern Lima, Colonial Lima, and Ancient Lima.
Mira Flores is a major suburb of Lima, and a very affluent one. Walking the streets and its cornice reminds one of being transported to Miami.
When walking the streets in Lima’s colonial quadrants, one cannot but help notice the intricate balconies and terraces.
A must visit is the Monastery of San Francisco to view its incredible catacombs. I have been to the Vatican and several monasteries and cathedrals around the world, but never been to a catacomb. You can still find thousands of human skulls and bones inside. Definitely stay with your tour group and don’t attempt to wander away in its intricate corridors.
Mira Flores is also home to one of largest artisanal markets in the southern hemisphere.
One has to make time, no matter what, to visit the incredible ruins of Huaca Pucllana, located smack dab in the centre of Mira Flores amidst a residential subdivision. These ruins pre-date the Inca civilization so I cannot emphasize the importance of this visit.
My visit to Lima was day 0 of an incredible 11 day journey through the majestic and diverse landscape and culture of Peru. It was both excitement and anticipation of storming, forming, conforming with the new members with whom our group was to commence this exciting journey.
